AAS 345 OL - Contemporary Asian American Issues

UNIT OBJECTIVES

1. Examine "model minority" stereotype
2. Understand the position of Asian Americans in the US racial hierarchy
3. Consider the issue of affirmative action for Asian Americans

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1. In units two and three, we learned about all of these negative Asian stereotypes. When did AA suddenly become a model minority and why? Explain the specific historical context for the shift.
2. What are the positive and negative aspects of being labeled a model minority? Be specific and provide concrete examples.

TASKS FOR THIS UNIT

• Wednesday, May 28th -  Post your response to the reading questions in the discussion forum - Model Minority by 5:00pm
• Respond to at least two other postings by 10:00pm
• Post brief description of the AA community that you plan to visit for the political tour assignment
  

UPDATE: Please a brief proposal for the political tour project in the discussion forum. Posting it there does not take full advantage of the ideal workflow on the website but it'll do for now. When it comes time to actually submit/post your projects, I'll have it better figured out.

	Updated Hi all, dates and links are all up-to-date now. Reformatting data as I move it over from the old website is really slow but I'm doing my best to keep up . Just in case anyone is wondering, it's not a typo and you should read or re-read chapters 5&6 from the textbook for this week's assignment as well. Please post any other questions about this week in general here. If you have a specific question on the discussion questions, please post that in the discussion forum for this week.
