UNIT OBJECTIVES

  1. Examine the perpetual foreigner stereotype in action
  2. Consider the larger context of US-Asia relations
  3. Think about the significance of the Lee case

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What is the significance of the Wen Ho Lee case for Asian Americans? Be specific about the impact and reaction to the case on the part of the Asian American community on one hand and mainstream society on the other. Tie the case, if you can, to the week three readings and this idea of Asian Americans as "perpetual foreigners."
  2. Congressman David Wu and Secretary of Transportation Norm Mineta, if you look at their lives and political careers, are about as "All-American" as you can get. How and why was their "Americaness" called into question post-9/11? Why is the"Asians as perpetual foreigners" syndrome so persistant?

Image TASKS FOR THIS UNIT

  • Prior to class - Read the required reading
  • Read discussion questions for this unit - SEE ABOVE
  • Friday, May 30th - Take pre-discussion quiz 4:30-5:00pm
  • Participate in discussion 5:00-5:45pm - Join CHAT through the menu above and then pick any one of the five discussion groups but please limit to 5 students maximum in a group!
  • Reporters reconvene in CHAT, main channel, 6:00-6:30pm

Caution: Be ontime for discussion just in case you are having trouble logging in or if you are confused about what to do. When people show up late for the discussion group then I have to repeat the same thing a million times and it's also disruptive for the groups that have already started discussion. It is your responsibility to READ and FOLLOW the instructions and timetable above.

Pick whichever channel you want but there should be no more than 4-5 students per group. If there are too many people joining, please POLITELY remind to try a different one!

Note: Once you are in a channel, choose a moderator. This should rotate and everyone will have a chance during the semester. You can use whatever format you want (free-for-all, moderated, raise hands, etc). Make sure that the moderator for your group takes roll call so that you get credit and then the moderators will be reporting back to the professor.

problems with quiz
when that happens, you need to refresh or reload the page, sometimes repeatedly, in order to clear out the old page that is still loading from your browser cache. with pc's there is some keyboard command to clear the cache when you're reloading the page but i don't know it, i use a mac.

the only time that this won't work is if you're accessing through AOL which seems to have an odd, long delay in allowing access to an updated page.

Unit 5 Group Discussion
We tackled on three different individuals during the chat; Ann Coulter, David Wu and Dr. Wen Lee.
We thought that Dr. Lee was extremely courageous for staying true to his beliefs and denying bail.
We discussed that Ann Coulter\'s beliefs are way to extreme making her seem angry and an attention seeker.
David Wu\'s denial into the conference both suprised and angered us. We thought that irregardless of which door he entered the venue the treatment he received was degrading.

BLUE GROUP DISCUSSION
Our group reacted strongly to the Wen Ho Lee case. Our discussion led to how sterottyping racial profiling instills fear in all of society. Ann Coulter was despised by all. The irony and absurdity of what happened to Congressman Wu got past no one.

Unit 5 Group Discussion, Red Room
Our group talked about both Wen Ho Lee and David Wu. We got caught up in a discussion about stereotypes and how we dislike them. Our group thought it was absolutely horrible that there was not enough evidence to back up the statements against Wen Ho Lee. As for David Wu some of us thought that the problem that occurred with him could have been due to a communication problem, but accusing him that his ID was fake was absurd, especially when he was invited to speak.

Unit 5 Group Discussion, Yello Room
Our group believed that the Wen Ho Lee case is the classic case of how Asian Americans are often subjected to prejudice, always treated with suspicion and distrust. This is racial profiling at its best. We also discussed how Asian Americans are still being looked at as perpetual foreigners. And in regards to David Wu, it was ironic how he had gone to speak about Asian American Heritage and was discriminated against.
