About the Poll Monitor Project

Want to help ensure that voters have fair and clean elections?

  • Are you energetic and friendly?
  • Do you have 2-3 hours to spare on February 5th?
  • Become a Poll Monitor!

The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC), a non-profit legal and civil rights advocacy
organization, conducts non-partisan poll monitoring of election poll sites every major election.
The federal Voting Rights Act protects the right of all Americans to have equal access to the
voting booth by requiring counties that have large populations of voters with language needs to
provide bilingual language assistance to such voters.  APALC organizes and trains poll monitors
to serve as independent watchdogs on Election Day to ensure make sure that all voters have
equal access to the ballot.

How can you be a Poll Monitor?

  1. Attend a 1½-hour training on what to watch for and how to complete a poll monitor form.
  2. On February 5, 2008, Election Day, visit two poll sites between the hours of 7:00 am –
9:30 am.  Complete a poll monitoring form based on your observations.
  3. Be able to drive to the assigned poll site(s) in Los Angeles or Orange County.  Los Angeles
County locations for February 2008 include:  Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Chinatown,
Pilipinotown, the San Gabriel Valley, South Bay, and Cerritos.  Orange County locations
include: Fullerton, Irvine, Garden Grove, and Westminster.
  4. Bilingual ability is a plus, but not necessary.
