The midterm is two-part. The first will be a short online quiz based upon the material covered in the first half of the course. The second is a report that you will submit based upon your research and visits to a local Asian American community. Check out reports from a previous semester on the API Communities in LA page from the old website [scroll down that page to find them] and yes, I will eventually move that data over to the new website . UNIT FOUR - February 13th: Submit your political tour proposal. Post in the discussion forum for the midterm project, briefly describing what community you will visit and what you plan to do for research.
The final report, due week seven, should be approximately 4-5 pages and should include maps and photos. You should focus on a local Asian American community in Los Angeles County: San Fernando Valley, Monterey Park, Chinatown, Manilatown, Little Tokyo, Koreatown, etc. I have posted some information on API communities in LA.
The idea is not to describe a purely demographic community (eg. all the Chinese Americans in Los Angeles) but instead to describe a local community that is centered around a geographic focus, a local area like a neighborhood that has businesses, social services, and restaurants geared toward that partricular ethnic community (eg. Little India).
You will be responsible for visiting and learning about this particular community. However, instead of being a tourist, your task will be to learn about the history and politics of this local community. You will then develop and sharing with your classmates a political tour report of that community. UNIT SEVEN - March 5th: Submit your final report which should include:
* history/background * contemporary situation * 2-3 major issues facing this community * map and basic demographic data * bibliography with 3-5 references (They shouldn't ALL be from the internet!)
You report should be based on visits and research that you conduct. I also expect you to use secondary sources. I would encourage you to also utilize local community sources such as newspapers or newsletters.
You can work in small groups if you want but you will need to submit an individual report. If you work as as group, you might be able to divide up a larger project and to report on more specific areas of that particular community. I can provide some leads in terms of resources and information.
The key here is to start early on and to give yourselves sufficient time to learn about the particular community and to develop and present your political tour report.
