Image from the movie JunoThe SF Chronicle has an interesting story today, Some not smiling over Juno's sarcasm on China. I haven't seen the movie but Juno is a critically acclaimed story about adoption and teenage pregnancy. This is the first that I've heard about the controversy.

Apparently, ...

In one scene, the title character sarcastically tells the rich suburban couple hoping to adopt her unborn child, "You shoulda gone to China. You know, 'cause I hear they give away babies like free iPods. You know, they pretty much just put them in those T-shirt guns and shoot them out at sporting events."

Some families that have actually adopted from China find it offensive and hard to just laugh off even though, according to the director and writers, it was meant to show the ignorance of the young protagonist

This is actually an important topic within Asian American Studies in terms of the many issues surrounding the large numbers of mostly Korean and Chinese children that have been adopted by white families in the US and Europe.

Has anyone seen the movie? Any thoughts on the controversy? Feel free to post comments here or at SFGate.com. You might want to take a look at the comments there as well. Even better, you can voice your opinion directly,

Sound off: Does that line from "Juno" offend you? Call (415) 777-6268 to comment for an Open Mic podcast at sfgate.com/podcasts.

How cool is that? If someone from the class posts a comment there that is then included in their podcast report, the least I can do is give extra credit.
