UNIT OBJECTIVES - Learn about the Vincent Chin case
- Consider the consequences of political scapegoating
- Examine the role of the media in fomenting hate crimes
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS - What is your response to what you saw and heard in the video?
- What was the specific historical context in US-Asia relations at the time of Chin's murder?
- What parallels can we draw between the Chin case and what is happening today with regards to people of Middle Eastern descent or who APPEAR to be of Middle Eastern descent?
TASKS FOR THIS WEEK
- Do required readings & watch required video. The video is available for viewing in the media library, 2nd floor, Oviatt Library.
- Wednesday, February 27th - Post your response to the reading questions in the discussion forum (bulletin board) - Vincent Chin by 5:00pm
- Respond to at least two other postings in the forum by 10:00pm
Note: The video, Who Killed Vincent Chin? is required viewing for this unit and is pretty much only available in the CSUN media library. Please make sure to plan ahead in order to watch it. There are two copies there in the library but you can't check it out, you have to watch it there. I used to have extra copies to mail out to people who lived far from campus but then I never got them back so I don't have them anymore. READINGS  REQUIRED
