DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. There are no discussion questions or pre-discussion quiz this week. Instead, there is a worksheet and keyword search prior to be completed prior to discussion. DON'T FREAK OUT, JUST READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW AND FOLLOW IT.

Image TASKS FOR THIS WEEK

  • Prior to class - Do the required readings
  • Wednesday, April 9th - Download the discussion worksheet prior to the start of class.
  • Keyword search assignment 4:30-5:00pm - Using a major search engine such as google do a keyword search for Hawaii. Find at least 2-3 websites that are tourist/vacation oriented and use to fill in Column One: Tourist Guides of the worksheet.  Be ready to discuss the tourist vs. trask viewpoints in group discussion.
  • Participate in discussion 5:00-6:00pm - Join any of the five discussion groups
  • Reporters should post a brief summary in the comments section of this unit AND email to the professor a completed worksheet that reflects the results of group discussion, including roll call, no later than 10pm.

Pick whichever channel you want but there should be no more than 4-5 students per group. If there are too many people joining, please POLITELY remind to try a different one!

Note for Moderators: This week's format is a little bit different than usual. Everyone will be downloading and using the worksheet for their own reference but the moderators should also use the worksheet to guide today's discussion, going through each section, and then filling in, more or less, what the group comes up with. ONLY the moderator will then need to email a completed worksheet, using the group's responses, to the professor.

Highly Recommended Video - Act of War
I've posted a video called, Act of War, Overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation [1993, 60 min]. The link is above, in the Optional Readings section. It's kind of hard to find it so I digitized and posted it for the class. It's in Quicktime format so you may need that plug-in depending upon which browser that you are using.

I would recommend watching it after class or if not, sometime this weekend. It's very good at giving you more of the background story of the overthrow of the Hawaiian government by the US and context of the current Native Hawaiian sovereignty movement. If you do watch the video let me know here in the comments with any thoughts on the quality of the picture, stream, audio, etc.

Group Discussion Today
Just to let you guys know, there is no moderator/reporters meeting today after group discussion. Just post your wrap-up here and then email me the worksheet, filled out, from your group discussion. I will not be online during the first part of class today so just follow the instructions above and then I should be logged in sometime before class ends today.

I have to fly up to Northern California a little bit later so that's why I'll be a little late logging on but you'll know what to do today and can manage without me for the first part of class.

Yellow Team Discussioin
Our group was very deeply into the discussion over the issues facing Hawaii today.

First we talked about its history and then discussed how difficult life is for natives and locals. Students will come to college on the mainland because there is little to offer them on the island. Locals often find themselves in low-paying jobs in order to entertain tourists. The tourism industry is what generates the money in Hawaii and motivated by the corporations, giving very little thought to the natives.

Group Discussion
today's group discussion was actually very productive and organized. having the worksheet as a guideline really helped with being organized. everyone in the group participated as much as they could and all of our ideas just fit together which made the entire process quite easy. Even though Trevor did have to leave the discussion early, he was actually a lot of help to the group and in completing this assignment. Overall I would have to say that this group discussion went by quite smoothly and we didn't really run through any problems.

Green Group Discussion
our group was very productive today and worked rather quickly. With the guidelines of the worksheet we were able to find what we needed quickly and efficiently. Each participant worked well with each other and everything went by smoothly with no problems. We did however have six members in our group and I hope this will not be too much of a problem.

Green Group Discussion
Hi
I am not the moderator but since I see theres nothing posted for the blue group, I will post something. We went through the worksheet and took a time discussing it. We first talked about the history and the history of the locals and tourism. The tourism industry is what generates the revenue in Hawaii but feel they should try to something else as well.
