UNIT OBJECTIVES - Examine youth issues
- Think about AA youth and the media
- Challenges some of the stereotypes
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS - Moving beyond simple model minority stereotypes that they are all good students, what is happening today among Asian American youth?
TASKS FOR THIS WEEK
- Using readings from this week or from Unit 1, find and discuss a news item or story that addresses some aspect of Asian American Youth. By youth, I mean children, teenagers, college-age and young adult. You have a tremendous amount of leeway here but the main task, collectively, is to develop a broad picture of some of the challenges and experiences of Asian American youth.
- Wednesday, April 16th - Post response to the reading questions in the discussion forum - Asian American Youth by 5pm
- Respond to at least two other postings by 10:00pm
- Although not required, I highly recommend that you rent Better Luck Tomorrow and read the controversy (see Ebert review below) about the film's portrayal of AA youth at the 2002 Sundance Festival. On a lighter note, you might check out Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004) for a less serious look at stereotypes.
