Just in time for this week's discussion is an article from AlterNet.com, Why Interracial Love is Still Hard, that presents what I would consider to be a mainstream take on the topic. That is to say that discussions of race and interracial issues tends to be mostly Black-White, not that there is anything wrong with that per se but that the Asian American perspective is often distinct from or overlooked in the discussion. However, to give credit where credit is due, the article does briefly mention at least one API perspective, "If I dated outside the Filipino community, my mother would go nuts," jokes (not really) Amy Padot, a 29-year-old web developer in Atlanta. "She justifies it as a way to preserve our culture, but I'm American-born and I don't agree. But I do admit that I date Filipino men to make things a little easier." If you venture into the comments of the article you'll find a couple of other Asian American mentions. Overall though, I thought the article sort of overlooked the issues of gender and power. Anyway, do check out the article and I'm looking forward to an interesting discussion on Wednesday. Add as favourites (0) | Views: 448 | Print
